Data Spaces Symposium 2023

The Data Spaces Symposium took place from 21 to 23 March 2023 in The Hague, and it was a resounding success. The event featured 150 expert speakers on five different stages and attracted over 700 visitors on the first day alone.

A particularly noteworthy highlight of the opening day was the keynote speech by Michiel Boots, Dutch Director-General for Economic Affairs and Digitalisation at the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. Boots shared valuable insights on the Dutch approach for data sharing and the need for international collaboration. This set the stage for various other discussions, addressing different aspects of the ground-breaking economic, societal and environmental impact that data spaces can and will have.

The second day of the symposium was marked by a diverse array of keynotes, all under the guiding star of the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC). The day's sessions were dedicated to sharing success stories and exploring the impact of data spaces from various perspectives, including business, legal, technical and organisational viewpoints. Furthermore, the DSSC Annual Conference was linked with the CIOFEST in Haarlem.

The session What data spaces in domains (could) look like, which also took place on the second day of the symposium, consisted of five parallel tracks and offered attendees valuable insights into a wide range of data space initiatives and use cases across various sectors. LDS Coordinator Georg Rehm introduced the European Language Data Space in the subcategory Culture heritage, language, media, skills, outlining the plans and potentials of the LDS and the emerging EDIC in the next three years.

The third and final day of the Data Space Symposium gave a deep-dive into the topic, featuring five different tracks that offered interactive workshops among many other discussions. As the Data Space Symposium drew to a close, attendees left with an expanded network of like-minded professionals that together helped to shape the future of data spaces.
